How Does Chiropractic Work for Migraines?

First of all, if you’re reading this article, we want to start by saying: we see you. As a Cambridge, Ontario, based chiropractor, we have seen more patients than we can count for migraine relief. We are deeply familiar with how debilitating (and stressful, and exhausting, and upsetting) it can be to deal with a migraine. Whether your migraines are chronic or sporadic, we’re sorry you’re dealing with them, and we would love to use our experience and knowledge to help.

What causes migraines in the first place?

Before we get into the question of how chiropractic works for migraines, let’s back up a few steps. What causes migraines in the first place? Well, that’s a tricky question, because there is no one simple answer. Migraines can be triggered by environmental factors, such as allergens or lighting. They can be brought on by stress and emotional trauma. They can absolutely relate to diet and nutritional deficiencies. They can be a symptom of illness or injury elsewhere in the body. Or, they can be brought on by, seemingly, nothing at all.

So if there’s no straightforward, universal cause for migraines, why do we bother spelling out so many maybe’s? Because chiropractic treatment isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach either. In fact, quite the opposite. Our treatment for each patient is based very specifically on their unique needs.

How does chiropractic work for migraines?

Our focus on the individual needs of each client is baked into not only how we treat migraine, but how we determine what treatment is needed in the first place. As a new client, before we begin treating you for migraine, we want to know your story — and your body’s story! And no one is a better expert on your body than you.

Our first step is a consultation, talking through your health history, what you’re experiencing, and what you would like to accomplish in our treatment together. The more we understand about how, when and why you are experiencing migraine, the better equipped we are to amend that what — the migraine itself.

Then we’ll conduct a thorough assessment of your body’s systems, including the curvature of your spine, but also several other systems and measurements. We want to complement your knowledge from your lived experience with as much detail about the mechanics as possible.

From there, we develop a treatment plan for how to treat your migraine with chiropractic care. It will likely include spinal adjustments (to improve the flow of information between your brain and your body, which, when disrupted, can cause all sorts of pain and discomfort), but there are many other methodologies we can use to help, based on your needs.

Letting the Body Lead

At the heart of it, here’s why chiropractic can be so helpful for migraines: because it doesn’t just treat the symptom — it treats the cause. We look to your body’s underlying state and work to restore it to wholeness and balance. Your body knows what to do, so by shaping chiropractic migraine care around your unique needs, we can get things back into alignment and then let the body heal itself.
